The seemingly diverse conditions illustrated in this month’s quiz are cutaneous signs of metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome refers to the combination of abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance.

Intertrigo due to Candida albicans

Candida albicans infection may present as intertrigo. Characteristically, the patient presents with acute or subacute erythema, superficial pustules and peeling in skin folds particularly in submammary and abdominal sites. Yeast infections are more common in obese subjects and are particularly prevalent in diabetics.
