Positive scratch test to venison blood in patient with contact urticaria

Meat worker.

Scratch testing may reveal a Type 1 hypersensitivity reaction. A careful history and examination may suggest a combination of contact urticaria and dermatitis in meat workers and chefs. This may be due to protein contact dermatitis to a food substance. Contact urticaria to venison blood was demonstrated in a meat worker who presented with chronic hand dermatitis.
