Although acute paronychia is bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus) or viral (Herpes simplex), chronic paronychia is often associated with Candida albicans. The nail fold is inflamed and lifted away from the nail plate; the nail plate may become ridged and yellow, green or black in colour.
