Case 5

The appearance illustrated was noticed on the thighs of a 75-year-old lady.

The patient has "erythema ab igne", a reticulated reddish brown pigmentation.

Erythema ab igne is due to chronic exposure to infrared radiation. Initial erythema is followed by hyperpigmentation after repeated prolonged exposure to the source of heat. The pigmentation is due to melanin and haemosiderin deposition and may persist indefinitely. Erythema ab igne may arise from sitting by a stove or heater or from applying a hot water bottle (as in the case illustrated).
