Case 3

Naevus flammeus (port wine stain)

The port wine stain is another capillary vascular malformation. At birth, a port wine stain is a unilateral flat, pink or red patch, but in an adult it tends to be a thicker, darker red or purple plaque. Various complex congenital syndromes may present with port wine stain(s). Early and expert treatment with vascular laser often improves or eradicates the naevus, although it may recur.
