Case 4

Dermatitis on hands and wrists due to rubber gloves; thiuram contact allergy.

Meat worker.

Rubber allergy may cause type IV hypersensitivity reactions (contact dermatitis). These mainly arise from accelerants used in the manufacture of the rubber. Thiuram is the most frequent allergen, giving rise to rubber glove dermatitis..

Type 1 hypersensitivity reaction to latex protein may also result in contact urticaria, hence red itchy and swollen hands in health workers donning latex gloves. The incidence appears to be reducing with the introduction of powder free latex and non-latex gloves.
